I am proud of us today because in music Mrs. Nicholson said we were very good with the Christmas concert songs. Don't forget that we get out early on Wednesday at 2:00 and have no school on Thursday or Friday. Happy Thanksgiving!

Note from Mrs. Schlickbernd: Our class has had some difficulty keeping track of pencils. The second graders tend to leave them all over the room and then don't have one ready when they need one. So, yesterday, I gave each student a brand new sharpened pencil with their number on it and I have challenged them to see who can use one pencil the longest! Our first check-in is on Friday. So far everyone has been super careful with their pencils!

Blue Ribbon School!
Today was an exciting day for our school! We found out this morning at an all-staff meeting that we were selected to be a National Blue Ribbon school for the 2013-2014 school year! WOW!! U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, recognized 286 schools as the 2013 cohort of National Blue Ribbon Schools, based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in improving student academic achievement.
In November, our principal, Mr. Wulf, and one teacher will travel to Washington, D.C. to accept our Blue Ribbon Reward from Arne Duncan. Following that trip, there will be a public reception here at school for everyone to attend to celebrate this accomplishment.
This is a HUGE honor for our school! I am so proud of our teachers, staff, and students for all of their hard work. This award is a true reflection of what we believe and stand for at Wakefield Elementary School. Our students and staff work hard to make sure every student is successful.

Good-Bye, Mrs. Sateren!
Today we had a farewell party for our student teacher, Lacey Sateren. Mrs. Sateren has been with our class since January and she is ready to graduate on Saturday! To celebrate, each student dedicated a book to her for use in her future classroom. We also made an iMovie about her time with us.
Each of the students shared a few notes about Mrs. Sateren. Then we had some yummy brownies and played one last game of Cherry Pie with Mrs. Sateren! We will miss her and wish her all the best in the future!

Critter City!
Our classroom has been invaded with critters this week! We are just starting a Science unit about animal life cycles, so of course we needed to have some animals to observe. We have 5 painted lady butterfly larvae that are growing rapidly inside their little container. They eat their food source at the bottom of the cup for a few weeks before they make a chrysalis and turn into butterflies. The students will be observing them daily and drawing and writing about what they see. Here are our 5 new caterpillar friends:
We have also welcomed 44 meal worms into our classroom. Each student is responsible for 4 worms. Over the next few weeks they will be watching and taking notes as they go through the remaining 3 stages of their life cycle. Some of the activities the students will do is to measure their worms, draw their life cycles, and see what happens when they blow on them. They are getting used to the idea that they actually have to touch them! Here are our meal worms:
We will keep our readers updated on how our critters change, so stay tuned!
