We are reading the Lorax and doing different activities with it.  We were doing the zoomers but our thumbs hurt!  Friday is Dr. Seuss' birthday!

Truffula Trees!

This morning in reading we began our author study on Dr. Seuss.  In case you didn't know, Friday is Dr. Seuss' birthday and we are celebrating him and his books all this week!  Today we read The Lorax and the students had to write down nine events from the story.  Then they cut out the events and put them in order onto the trunk of their very own Truffula tree!  After making the Truffula tops, we hung them up in the hallway to create our very own Truffula tree forest!  It was great fun!  Here are some pictures of our forest:

Today we learned more about rotation and spinning in Science.  We made zoomers.  Ella's hat for crazy hat day is so funny!  It has a car, a bowling pin, a gummy bear, glitter, and maracas on it!  Tomorrow is many colors day.

Rotation, reflection, translation, oh my!

Today in math we learned about ways to move shapes: rotation, reflection, and translation.  We also finished up a week-long study of reality and fantasy in Daily 5 Reading.  Here is Brooke to tell you a bit more about our day!

P.S. - I love our camera-girl's voice at the end.  She cracks me up!

Today during Daily 5 reading we learned about fantasy and reality using "Mice and Beans" by Pam Munoz Ryan.  We made charts about what could really happen and what couldn't happen in real life.  We learned about congruent shapes in math.  In Science we did more with tops and learning about motion and spinning.  Here are some of the videos from our explorations.

Yesterday Mrs. Schlickbernd told us we were experts on balance so we are going to learn about motion now.  We learned that the movement of a top is called spinning or rotating.  We made tops out of disks and straws.  It was funny when we played with our tops and we said "Action!"  It was Gabe's birthday and he brought fun cupcakes that looked like the beach!

Today we learned about plane shapes and how they are flat surfaces and faces on solid figures.  We took a buddy test for spelling.  We played games on the SMARTboard that were about our story "A Harbor Seal Pup Grows Up".  It was funny when Cataleena kicked the ball over her head in PE.  There is a two-hour late start on Monday.

Here is our second video entry!  It got a little cut off at the beginning.  We took a math test today over subtraction with regrouping.  We also practiced using our reading vocabulary words.  Here's Susy!

We're trying something new today!  The girls wanted to try to do a video blog update, so here it is!  I'm so proud of them!  The practice test we took was for our math test tomorrow over subtraction with regrouping.  We had a fun afternoon opening our Valentine's Day boxes and thanking each other for their Valentines.  Here are Brooke and Ella!

Today we learned about solving two-part math stories in math.  We had to use the answer to the first part to help us answer the second part.  Tomorrow is Valentine's Day!  Remember to bring your valentines in the morning if you haven't brought them already.

Today we learned how to add to check subtraction.  We had to rewrite all of our subtraction problems as addition problems then solve them!  We read about the emergency room in reading.  Parent teacher conferences are tomorrow.

Today we learned about Rosa Parks.  She was a black woman who wouldn't give up her seat to a white man way back in the day.  We practiced more on subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping.  Parent-teacher conferences are on Thursday the 9th from 3:00-9:00.

Today we learned more about balance.  We had to balance a pencil on it's tip!  We could use one of our pencils, some wire, and clothespins.  It was tricky!

In math we learned how to subtract two-digit numbers from two-digit numbers.  It really wasn't harder than two-digit minus one-digit numbers.  Mrs. Schlickbernd had to go to a meeting, so Mrs. Soderberg filled in for our read aloud of "Bunnicula".  It was funny when Mrs. Soderberg said "MEOW!!!!!!!!!!" and screamed "AHHHHHHHH!" the whole time!

Today we learned how to subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping without using models.  We watched a book-flix about  the Teacher from the Black Lagoon.  It was funny!  The schedule for parent-teacher conferences went home yesterday.  Let the office know if you need to change.

Today we learned about balance.  We had to balance an arch and a triangle on a popsicle stick using clothespins to help.  We learned that counterweight needs to be added to the bottom to change the center of gravity.  In math we are working on adding two-digit numbers with regrouping.  It's tough, but we are getting it!  Mrs. Schlickbernd calls us "Super Re-groupers!"  Don't forget to bring empty cereal boxes for Valentine's Day!

Today we balanced paper crayfish on our fingers to learn about balance, balance point, and counterweight.  It was fun!
