Today we learned a new math card game called A-Ten-Tion. It was fun! We are supposed to say if the number is odd or even. The first person to get 100 points, wins the game. In PE Mr. Eaton thought we said "pair of shoes" instead of "parachute"! We start reading the book "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" today as a whole school.

In math we are learning mental addition. Today we learned how we add the tens first in our heads then add the ones. In reading our story is "Abuelo and the Three Bears". There are a lot of Spanish words in it! In music it was funny when everybody slapped their sides and it made a loud noise! Our Christmas concert is on Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

Today we learned about the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians on the Internet. We learned that they both had to pick up firewood and carry water. The Pilgrims lived in houses and the Wampanoags lived in wetus.

Today in math we learned that you have to write a "c" with a line through it to make a cents sign. We do that so we know it's money. It was funny in guidance when we were watching a bullying movie and Diego shouted, "Stop bullying now!" We have a late start on Monday the 14th and we get out at 2:00 on the 23rd for Thanksgiving break.

Today we learned how to use an ELMO. This ELMO does not mean like the red puppet ELMO. This one is a camera that you can put stuff under and it shows up on the SMARTboard. Cool! It was funny in PE when we were doing the parachute and everybody kept on pulling the parachute when they were not supposed to.

In math we learned about odd and even numbers. We discovered that if the ones is even or odd, then the whole row going down on the hundreds chart will be even or odd! It was funny during Guidance when Mr. Clay said, "Hey! Give me my peach!" Some of us have bad weather information sheets for moms and dads to fill out.

Today we learned about South America. Students from Wayne State College came and brought a HUGE map that they laid out in the gym. We had to take our shoes off in order to stand on it. They showed us different parts of South America. In P.E. it was funny when we were playing freeze tag and Christian yelled, "Get Ella!" because Ella was the last one it.

Today Mrs. Schlickbernd taught us about something she learned at her meeting yesterday. She showed a new way to raise our hands. We can't raise our hands until she says the magic word "volunteer". If we know the answer, our hand is open. If we have a question or comment, our hand is closed like a fist. Tomorrow is the costume parade!

We learned a song about nouns. It was very "nouny"! Jonathan in our class won the hot air balloon coloring contest for second graders! Congrats Jonathan!

The Daily 5 and FACE Menu
It won’t be long until you hear about “The Daily 5” and the “FACE Menu”, so I wanted to give you a quick overview of this literacy framework, developed by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, so that you’ll know what your child is talking about.
The Daily Five is a way of structuring our reading block so that every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research-based tasks are fun, engaging, and have big impacts on student reading and writing achievement. Each day, the students will receive 2-3 whole group reading strategy lessons. In between these group lessons, the students will work independently on one of the “Daily 5” tasks for 15-20 minutes. During this time, I will provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students. Here are the Daily 5 components:
1. Read to Self: The research continually shows that the very best way to become a better reader is to practice, practice, practice! Your child will read books at his/her “just right” level each day, practicing reading strategies from the FACE menu. Reading is FUN!
2. Read to Someone: Reading to someone helps develop reading fluency and comprehension, and it’s FUN!
3. Listen to Reading: Listening to reading helps children develop reading fluency. It also allows them to access texts that they can’t read independently yet. And of course, it’s FUN!
4. Work on Words: Working with words helps children become better spellers and writers. Your child will learn about word families, practice high frequency ‘sight’ words using Wikki-Stix, stamps, bottle caps, and whiteboards, and work on spelling. Working on words is FUN!
5. Work on Writing: Just like it takes practice, practice, practice to become a better reader, it takes practice, practice, practice to become a better writer! During Work on Writing your child will work on writing of their own choice. Working on writing is FUN! We will also have a separate Writer’s Workshop later in the day to work on specific forms of writing.
The FACE menu is a collection of highly effective reading strategies that the students will be taught to use, to help them become better readers. They are organized into four goals:
F is for Fluency: “I can read smoothly, with expression.”
A is for Accuracy: “I can read the words.”
C is for Comprehension: “I understand what I read.”
E is for Expanding Vocabulary: “I know, find, and use interesting words.”
During individual conferences, I will listen to your child read, help him/her pick a reading goal, and suggest a reading strategy that will help. I will provide coaching on how to use the strategy, and then meet back with your child at a later date to see if he/she has been able to use the strategy.
I hope that this brief introduction to the “The Daily 5” and the “FACE Menu” has been helpful. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to answer them.

Two more days!
Wow! Can you believe that school starts in two days? I am so excited to meet my bunch of second graders. We are doing to have a wonderful year!
Let me tell you a little bit about me: My name is Sara Schlickbernd (you can call me Mrs. S.) and this is my second year teaching second grade at Wakefield Community Schools. I have been married almost 7 years to my husband, Mike, and we have two amazing kids: Jack, who is 5 and a half and will be a Kindergartner at Wakefield this year, and Molly, who is almost 15 months old. They both keep us hopping!
I have been busy working in our classroom and I can't wait for you to see it! Don't forget to come to "Meat and Greet" on Monday night from 6-7. Come see me and deliver all of your supplies to our room. After that, head to the lunch room to grab supper. The school board is providing hotdogs and hamburgers for all who come to meet their teachers! Get it? MEAT and greet? :)
One more thing: See this blog? This is going to be our classroom's little corner of the World Wide Web. You will be working with me to post about stuff that we're doing in our classroom. I thought moms and dads might like to keep track of what's going on. So make sure to check back often to see what's happening in second grade!
See you soon, second graders! I can't wait to meet you!
