So what do you do with 11 second graders on a snowy late-start day? You give them their Christmas presents (a deck of cards and two dice) and a math card game instruction book! We have been playing card games off and on throughout the semester that enhance the math skills we are learning. Today we challenged each other to learn a new game out of the book. It was fun!

Christmas Craziness!
We have been super busy in second grade the last few weeks! Unfortunately, our blog posts have been fewer and fewer because we've been so busy working on our Christmas projects! This is what we've been working on:
Of course we started with the ever-important letter to Santa Claus. We jazzed ours up a bit this year with a Santa Clause craft, too! I got this great idea from Amy Lemons at Step Into Second Grade. Her Christmas Craze unit is awesome! Here are some pictures:

Next, we heard that Santa was advertising for new reindeer. So we all applied and got the job! Here is a picture of the applications we filled out, plus a picture of us doing our best reindeer impressions. I think Santa was super-impressed:
Last Thursday we got together with Mr. Johnson's class to make our tree ornaments. We used simple paper towel tubes that we cut into narrow strips. The students glued them together then the glitter-fest began! We had glitter from wall-to-wall, but the ornaments turned out great! Here is a snapshot of a few ornaments and our classroom Christmas tree:
Finally, the students presented their Christmas program on December 4. It was wonderful! All of their hard work definitely paid off and the families and friends that came had a great time.
Thanks for checking up on us! We've been having a great time and are looking forward to Christmas!

iMovie Fun!
One of our guided reading groups has been busy making iMovie trailers for a book we recently finished reading: Stuart Goes to School by Sara Pennypacker. They used the iPads and the iMovie app to shoot themselves acting out scenes from the story. The students also had to write words that described the main events of the story. They had a TON of fun with this project and were very excited to share them with our blog readers! Enjoy!

From Mrs. Schlickbernd
What a whirlwind the first days of school can be! We have been busy in the classroom setting goals and expectations for our learning and behavior. To emphasize our classroom rules, we each created a puzzle piece with something that we do in our classroom. It will hang on our wall all year to remind us that if one piece is missing, it isn't a complete puzzle. Likewise, if we stop doing one of those things, there will be a big hole in our classroom.
We also started learning about our first Daily 5: Read to Self. We spent a lot of time creating our anchor chart and going over student and teacher expectations. Then we practiced, practiced, practiced! Our goal is to reach 20 minutes of non-stop independent reading. Here is a picture of our anchor chart.
It has been a joy to get to know your children so far and I am looking forward to an exciting year in second grade!

We learned about Carl Johnson who survived when the Titanic sunk. He lived in Nebraska, but now he's dead. It was funny when Susy and Ella made up a poem about a kangaroo at recess. It goes like this "I'm a kangaroo, I know what to do. I live at a house so I grab my mouse, because I'm a kangaroo" They are going to sing it to the class someday. Catching Up

Today in Math we started our new topic about weight and capacity. Capacity means how much something can hold. Weight means how heavy something is. It was funny in Science when Susy sat on her cookie! We don't have school on Friday!
By Olivia
So I bet you're wondering why we had cookies in Science, right? We used Oreo cookies to demonstrate the 8 phases of the moon! Starting with a new moon, the students had to use their cookies to create the other 7 phases. It was challenging to get the frosting in just the right spot, but they did a great job! The best part was after they could tell me the phases, they got to eat their "moons"! Here are some pictures of our project. ~ Mrs. Schlickbernd

Today we had special visitors for the last half hour of the school day. Mr. Johnson's class came over to partner-read with us! We reviewed how we sit when we read to someone: EEKK! That stands for elbow to elbow, knee to knee. That way both of us can hear when our partner reads and we can both see the book. Ever wonder what it sounds like when 20 second graders are reading at the same time? Take a look and listen to the video. Music to this teacher's ears! :)

Today in reading we read Nutik, the Wolf Pup with a partner. Then we used the iPads to visit www.arkive.org to learn more about wolves, since Nutik is a wolf pup. We could look at pictures of Grey Wolves and watch videos about them. The wolf pups were funny to watch! We even got to hear what wolves sound like when they howl! Here are some pictures of us using the iPads.
In math we learned about area. The area of a shape is how many square units are on the inside of the shape. We also reviewed perimeter, which is the measurement of the outside of a shape. We finished our names and measured the perimeter of each letter. Lunch tomorrow is meatballs in gravy, mashed potatoes, wheat roll, and fresh pineapple.

Today we started to learn about fractions. We learned that when the top and bottom numbers are the same, then that means it's whole. In Guidance we learned about feelings - sad, mad, happy, good, angry. We read Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! It is by Dr. Seuss. Then we created a new teacher and told about what he/she teaches.
We had a big flood today in our classroom when the toilet in the boy's bathroom overflowed. Josie came with the shop vac and saved the day! Ella had crazy and freaky hair (it was crazy hair day). Cataleena was on the floor laughing so hard during Science!

Truffula Trees!
This morning in reading we began our author study on Dr. Seuss. In case you didn't know, Friday is Dr. Seuss' birthday and we are celebrating him and his books all this week! Today we read The Lorax and the students had to write down nine events from the story. Then they cut out the events and put them in order onto the trunk of their very own Truffula tree! After making the Truffula tops, we hung them up in the hallway to create our very own Truffula tree forest! It was great fun! Here are some pictures of our forest:

Today during Daily 5 reading we learned about fantasy and reality using "Mice and Beans" by Pam Munoz Ryan. We made charts about what could really happen and what couldn't happen in real life. Yesterday Mrs. Schlickbernd told us we were experts on balance so we are going to learn about motion now. We learned that the movement of a top is called spinning or rotating. Today we learned more about balance. We had to balance a pencil on it's tip! We could use one of our pencils, some wire, and clothespins. It was tricky!
In math we learned how to subtract two-digit numbers from two-digit numbers. It really wasn't harder than two-digit minus one-digit numbers. Mrs. Schlickbernd had to go to a meeting, so Mrs. Soderberg filled in for our read aloud of "Bunnicula". It was funny when Mrs. Soderberg said "MEOW!!!!!!!!!!" and screamed "AHHHHHHHH!" the whole time!

Today we learned about maps and map keys. Symbols show where things are on a map. In reading we learned about Author's Purpose. We learned that authors write books for three reasons: Persuade, Inform, or Entertain: PIE! We drew a picture of a pie to help us remember author's purpose.
We have a new student in our class. Her name is Harley.

Today we learned about art and why we make art. Sculptures are art and some people carve sculptures out of snow! For Olivia's birthday we played Angry Birds. The blue bird just fell to the ground.

It was an exciting day back from our long Christmas break! We are starting a new Writers' Workshop format with the new year as well as a new Math Workshop rotation. Both changes will allow me one-on-one time with each student! If you have any questions about our new schedule, please don't hesitate to ask!
